Apple has recently acquired Mobeewave, a startup specializing in online payments. The price of the deal is 100 million dollars. According to Bloomberg, the company's technology may allow Apple to turn iPhones into mobile payment terminals accepting mobile payments. To be more specific, Mobeewave developed a technology making it possible to make financial transactions between mobile devices through the built-in NFC module.
Apple usually buys startups in order to integrate the newly-purchased products and services with their own products. Mobeewave's technology makes it possible to use a smartphone as a payment card or to transfer funds between two smartphones. All you need is an NFC-powered smartphone and a special app. NFC is nothing new, all iPhones manufactured in 2014 and later have NFC modules.
Apparently, this seems like a realy decent investment since this technology will allow entrepreneurs and plain folks to make payments without having to use any extra equipment. This is expected to become the next big step taken by Apple in this direction after introducing Apple Pay and Apple Card. Chances are, after purchasing Mobeewave, Apple will preserve all of its developer team.
