USA Today has named the reasons why the United states should be concerned about the armed conflict in the East of Ukraine.
Previously, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asked his European colleagues why American taxpayers should be concerned about the situation in Ukraine. The answer came from his French colleague, who said that the United States should be interested in a strong Europe. On top of that, there are some other reasons why the USA shouldn’t stop thinking about Ukraine.
One of such reasons is the fact that the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine by annexing the Crimea and starting an armed conflict in the East of Ukraine with the help of local separatists. Simply put, Russia violated the key principle of international relations, which says that no borders can change by using military power. They say that what Russia has been doing so far in Ukraine is the same thing that Saddam Hussein wanted to do with Kuwait and Adolf Hitler wanted to do with the entire Europe. This is what Western media think on the matter.
The second reason is believed to be related to Russia directly. Since Vladimir Putin came into power, Russia has turned into a state wanting to dominate its neighbors by applying energy, cyber and military force. With that being said, Putin should figure out that applying force won’t make Russia great again.
One more thing is about Ukraine’s former nuclear status. During the USSR, most of the soviet nuclear arsenal was deployed in Ukraine. After the USSR ceased to exist, there were concerns that nuclear weapons could get into the wrong hands. Finally, Ukraine got rid of the nuclear status in 1994 in exchange of the guarantees of territorial integrity. It was guaranteed by Russia and the USA. However, as we can now see, those promises worth nothing since Russia annexed Crimea. This should be a signal to other European countries with non-nuclear status. Getting rid of this status can be dangerous to the country’s integrity. The promise given by a state is an obligation. Each time the politicians in Washington don’t keep their promises, this stimulates America’s enemies to challenge the USA and its allies.
