From now on, the British government is allowed to start the so-called Brexit, i.e. the process of quitting the European Union for good. The thing is that the previously approved document aimed at starting the Brexit procedure is now signed by Queen Elizabeth II. This means that the British government has got a green light to implement the people’s will expressed during the corresponding referendum on June 23rd, 2016. From now on, there is no stopping Theresa may from starting the Brexit.
At the same time, international observers, especially those from Western Europe, are worried that the Brexit is going to create the first precedent, and may even start the so-called domino effect. The thing is, up until recently, the EU has been expanding. No EU member has ever quit the union, even though a couple of years ago, there was a threat of a Grexit, which stands for a Greek exit from the EU.
So, what exactly is so dangerous about the Brexit? The whole point is, other EU members discontent with the Brussels’ policies may also start the same procedure of quitting the European Union in search of a better economic and financial future, especially if the Brexit eventually turns out to be a success leading to a brighter future outside of the union. However, if the Brexit turns out to be a failure leading to worse living standards, other EU members will definitely learn a lesson from that and will stop thinking about quitting the EU. That’s for sure.
At the same time, the very Brexit may split the United Kingdom, since Scotland is definitely against quitting the EU. They want to stay a part of the union and enjoy the benefits of their EU membership. This is why Scotland is about to initiate their won referendum on their UK membership, and the thing is that various surveys shown that most Scots support the idea of quitting the UK in favor of the EU. Again, if Scotland does quit the UK, this may trigger a wave of separatism all across Europe. For example, Catalonia may want to quit Spain .
Anyway, experts think that the UK government is going to take their time and extend the period of quitting the EU in order to minimize the negative consequences of this process. Whether this will be good or bad for the UK, that remains to be seen in the near future…
