Since Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, the international community has been discussing the possibility of a big deal between Moscow and Washington, with the USA betraying Ukraine and giving it to Russia. In reality international experts can hardly believe that this can happen. Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, shares this standpoint.
We should remind you that the mentioned American diplomat used to be the U.S. ambassador to Russia. That’s why he is well informed about the real state of affairs when it comes to the bilateral relations between the Kremlin and the While House. When being interviewed by a Ukrainian journalist, he completely rejected the likelihood of a big deal at the expense of Ukraine. Even if this deal does take place, this will be one of the biggest strategic mistakes ever for the USA, escalating the instability in Europe and the entire world.
Apparently, this is something Russia keeps on dreaming of, but it’s a nightmare for Europe and the Western world in general. He thinks that it would be more beneficial for the USA to reinforce ties with real partners including Ukraine since they do not pursue any hidden goals and don’t play dirty games behind the scenes, unlike Russia.
At the same time, it’s hard to say how deep Trump’s administration is going to get involved in deescalating the Russia-Ukraine conflict. All in all, he says that Washington seems to be willing to make friends with Moscow, by the USA is definitely not going to satisfy Putting’s dreams by means of recognizing Russia’s annexation of the Crimea and the armed conflict in Donbass. That’s one of the key reasons why a big deal between Russia and the US is unlikely.
