At this point, London is at the crossroads and choosing the way to quit the European Union. What are those possible ways the UK government is currently choosing from?
Just in case you still don’t know, we remind you that the High Court of London finally decided to reject the appeal made by the British Government regarding the High Court’s previous decision. The decision forces the Government to initiate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty only if the British Parliament approves it. In case the Parliament doesn’t support the Brexit scenario, any further related steps initiated by the UK Government will be considered a violation.
At the same time, Theresa May insists that the UK Government can initiate the Brexit procedure without the Parliament’s consent. According to her, the right is backed by the so called royal prerogative, which used to give the King of the Queen the exceptional right to make some important decisions without having to wait for the Parliament to approve them. Since the Government is now the supreme executive body, the royal prerogative is claimed to be inherited from the monarchy. The ministers are responsible for the executing the Brexit, which came as the result of the referendum, which is the people’s will. However, the High Court doesn’t seem to share this standpoint.

Previously, The Washington Post wrote that in case of rejection, the Government would try to provide the Parliament with the Brexit plan as soon as possible to try and complete the approval before the end of March. In order to start the Brexit procedure immediately. This is the deadline set by Theresa May. The Prime Minister says that this decision made by the High Court won’t make any changes to the existing Brexit plan.
Meanwhile, Theresa May is busy looking for the golden medium between the 2 scenarios – a mild Brexit scenario with retaining social and economic ties with the EU and a complete exit with no European integration whatsoever. The latter implies trade relations with the EU based on the WTO’s general rules. If they manage to find a third way, this is going to be limited to quitting all EU agreements and signing new specific ones instead.
