Sometimes journalists turn into good writers creating bestsellers. The thing is such books usually seem like something that opens your eyes to see well-known truths that you didn't want to realize before. Maybe it is about the point of view?
Not so long ago, Malcolm Gladwell, a staff writer for The New Yorker, wrote another bestseller called Outliers: The Story of Success
This is what is written about the book in the amazon.com:
In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?
His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.
Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.
Well, if to believe the author, nobody is born a genius. The thing is that a person needs to work for 10 000 hours in the direction in which he/she would like to succeed. The book is full of examples, arguments and facts.
Still the author cannot answer the question why different people have different learning skills.
Another interesting thing to pay attention to the author's thoughts about poverty. On the one hand, he says poverty is not a defect. However, it is extremely difficult to collect 10 000 hours of practice in your favourite job when you have to study at school and/or university. Work and do many routine things.
At the same time, he says the American dream is not to give up everything and work in the only direction. It is about learning to work efficiently in general, thereby working out useful habits and traits.
Expert Opinion
One way or another, some experts still believe that any person can single out several fields of human activity to succeed in, not to mention some “hidden talents” that are usually discovered by chance. Well, the Age of Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment proved that it is possible to successfully work on several talents simultaneously.
