Uganda, Africa’s major producer and exporter of coffee, is planning to increase the production of coffee by 400% within the next few years, especially as the global consumption of coffee keeps growing steadily all around the globe.
The representatives of the local government have recently had talks with the International Coffee Organization (ICO). They announced about their decision to boost the local production of coffee up to 12 million bushels within a few year.
As for the 2012-2013 agricultural year, Uganda’s coffee harvest is expected to boost by 10%.
The local government is still considering price hikes in order to increase the income from the coffee export.
Experts say that in order to reach the ambitious goal, Uganda will have to plant at least 20 million high-yielding coffee trees a year within the next 8 years.
For reference sake, coffee export is the 2nd major industry for the local economy after tourism. The coffee exported mainly to Asia, the EU and the USA.
