Today we can see a real boom in the mobile device industry. More people start purchasing smartphones and tablet PCs, which are getting more powerful.
They are capable of doing almost anything that desktop PCs and laptops do. You can surf the web, play games, chat, listen to music, watch movies and so much more.
In this article we will have a closer look at smartphones. In particular, we will find out what smartphones are the most popular mobile devices.
Smartphone Rating 2012
According o the IDC, there were 181.1 million smartphones sold in Q3 2012 (56 millions of them were manufactured by Apple and Samsung), which is +46% (y/y). The total amount of mobile devices sold during the reported period reached 444 million units, which is +2.5% (y/y).
Apple and Samsung remain the frontrunners. They account almost for 50% of the entire sales. Other manufacturers lag behind dramatically:
· Research In Motion (RIM) – 4.3% of the total sales volume
· ZTE – 4.2%
· HTC – 4%
Other companies’ market share is even smaller.

iPhone 5 became the world’s most popular smartphone in November, thus making Apple the world’s richest tech company. Apple sold over 5 million iPhone 5 during the first 3 days, thereby breaking the record.
