The latest agreement reached between the Greek government and the Euro Group regarding the conditions for getting further financial support triggered a wave of protests throughout Greece.
The adversaries of the compromise with the lenders as well as the supporters of a Greek exit from the Eurozone gathered together yesterday, on July 13th, in front of the local parliament and burned the SYRIZA flag.
According to German media, most of the protesters are sure that Alexis Tsipras betrayed the Greek people when he decided to compromise with the lenders in order to avoid a default. They want the government to resign. On top of that, they say that Greece should quit the Eurozone as soon as possible.
Apparently, the key reason why most of the Greeks are discontent is the list of austerity steps required to get financial support. This is treated as humiliation. The austerity steps are unacceptable and that is why the likelihood of preliminary parliamentary elections has increased dramatically. It is expected that the elections will take place earlier this fall.
At the same time, other political parties that created a coalition with Alexis Tsipras’s party are not going to vote for the austerity steps. They are going to hold a 24-hour strike on the very day.
